Wig Care Guide
How to Care for Your Wig
A human hair wig that is washed and stored properly lasts around a year of regular wear — and longer if you rotate between two. Here is how to get there.
Washing
Wash every 7–10 wears, or sooner if you use a lot of product. Detangle gently first, from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb, never from the roots down.
- Use cool or lukewarm water — never hot. Hot water loosens knots on the lace and dries the hair.
- Work a sulphate-free shampoo downwards from cap to ends. Do not scrub in circles; that is what causes matting at the nape.
- Condition the lengths and ends only. Keep conditioner off the lace and the knots, or shedding increases.
- Rinse thoroughly, squeeze gently, and never wring or twist.
Drying
Blot with a towel and air dry on a wig stand or mannequin head where possible — this holds the cap shape. If you must blow dry, use the cool setting and a diffuser on curly textures. Never brush a wet wig.
Heat styling
Human hair wigs can be straightened and curled like your own hair. Always use a heat protectant and keep tools below 180°C (350°F). Higher heat is what turns a good wig dry and straw-like, and it cannot be undone.
Synthetic wigs cannot be heat styled or dyed. Keep them away from straighteners, curling irons, ovens and open oven doors. Check your product page for which type you bought.
Colouring
Natural-colour human hair wigs can be dyed, but have it done by a professional — bleaching on a cap is unforgiving and mistakes are permanent. Pre-coloured pieces such as 613 blonde, 99J burgundy and ginger #350 are ready to wear and can be toned down but not reliably lightened further.
Storing
Store on a wig stand or in the net it arrived in, away from direct sunlight. Do not leave it bunched in a drawer — that is how caps lose shape and curls flatten on one side. Loosely braid long curly wigs before storing to prevent tangling.
Protecting the lace
- Cut lace slowly and in small increments. You cannot put it back, and a cut wig is no longer returnable.
- Remove adhesive fully with a proper remover, not by pulling. Pulling tears the lace and takes knots with it.
- Give your own hair and scalp a rest between installs.
Sleeping and daily wear
Avoid sleeping in a lace wig where you can. If you do, braid or pineapple the hair and use a satin bonnet or pillowcase — cotton causes friction, frizz and breakage at the ends.
